The biggest difference isn’t necessarily everyday spending. Budapest’s additional cost can come from accommodation and allocating more money to signature paid experiences, while Kraków’s compact centre also makes it easier to explore extensively on foot.

Flights from the UK: Which City Is Easier to Reach?

Both Kraków and Budapest are established European city-break destinations with direct air connections from the UK, although exact routes and frequencies vary by airport and season.

For most travellers, the more important consideration is your specific departure airport.

A very cheap flight isn’t necessarily good value if reaching the departure airport involves an expensive train journey, airport hotel or several hours of additional travel.

For example, someone living close to Manchester may find that a moderately priced direct flight from Manchester offers better overall value than travelling across the country to take advantage of a cheaper fare from a London airport.

The same logic applies whether you’re flying to Kraków or Budapest.

Airport Transfers: Which Is Easier?

This is one area where Kraków has a practical advantage.

Kraków Airport has a rail connection to Kraków’s main railway station, making arrival relatively straightforward for many visitors.

Budapest Airport does not have the same direct city-centre rail experience. Many visitors instead use the 100E airport bus or other transport options to reach central Budapest.

Once you’ve arrived, however, Budapest’s extensive public transport network makes moving around the city relatively easy.

Kraków’s historic centre is compact.

If you stay around the Old Town, Kazimierz or another well-connected central area, you’ll probably cover much of your sightseeing on foot.

Trams and buses are available when you need them.

At the time of our latest check, Kraków’s official transport authority lists fares including PLN 20 for a 24-hour Zone I ticket and PLN 55 for a 72-hour ticket covering Zones I–III. (ZTP Kraków)

The big advantage isn’t necessarily that every transport ticket is cheaper.

It’s that you may not need to use public transport very much at all.

Getting around Budapest

Budapest is much larger.

Its attractions are spread across both sides of the Danube, and public transport will probably become a more important part of your trip.

Fortunately, Budapest has an extensive network.

BKK currently lists a 24-hour Budapest travelcard at HUF 2,750 and a 72-hour travelcard at HUF 5,750. (BKK)

For travellers who enjoy exploring a large city, Budapest’s transport system makes that manageable.

For a very short break, however, Kraków’s compactness can mean less planning and more sightseeing.

Both cities offer accommodation ranging from hostels and apartments to boutique hotels and luxury properties.

The important thing when comparing them is location.

For Kraków, first-time visitors will often find areas around the Old Town and Kazimierz particularly convenient.

Budapest can certainly work as a weekend destination, but we’d prefer having slightly longer.
